I have a confession for you all. I don’t wake up super motivated. Because of my profession, it may be easy to mistake me for someone who naturally wakes up eager to exercise, eat some kale, and hydrate. Nope, that’s not me! One of my soul lessons here on this gorgeous planet has been to learn how to care for the person I am first thing in the morning, so that I can show up grateful for another day to fulfill my soul’s mission.
Routines, rituals, dopamine, and discipline. Motivation and fulfillment can be understood in a number of ways. I coach with a variety of these approaches in my practice because different things work for different people on their healing journeys. And for me? Well, I love instant gratification so knowing that I’ll age more comfortably and be less prone to disease is not enough to overcome the desire to stay in bed a little longer. I want to have immediate, personally meaningful reasons to be consistent with health promoting habits.
This is what I call the Whys. What do I mean by Whys? Or do I mean Wise? Oooh, I do love a little word play. The Whys are wise, if you catch my meaning. Here are some examples of my wise Whys.
- I want to feel ease in my body, so my morning begins with gentle stretching in bed.
- I want to feel clear minded, so I fill up a big water glass and flush out the toxins from a night of cellular repair.
- I want to be able to move my beehives and harp without injury, so I lift weights three times a week.
- I want to feel connected, grounded and guided, so I meditate, journal, or pray.
And every day I do these practices, I get there. Sometimes to feeling good or great, but always to at least feeling grateful. Grateful to be in this body, in this life, gifted with another day to show up for my soul’s purpose. And that is part of the medicine I bring to my practice and get to share with you all on your health journeys: how life changing a shift in our perspective can be. And not just once or twice! Every. Day. It is possible to be transformed by the wonder of a changed perspective literally every day. It’s really quite miraculous when you think about it!!
